Koosah Falls, Winter Study by greglief Koosah Falls, Winter Study by greglief
Thank you for taking the time to visit my gallery. Faves and comments are always appreciated! Also, I invite you to download this image to use as desktop wallpaper. Please respect my work by not printing, selling, or reposting it.

Koosah Falls (Willamette National Forest, Oregon USA) on a chilly January day! Only a tiny bit of green was visible on the tree branches beneath the snow, so I converted it to grayscale.

NOTE: When displayed at its default size, the photo may appear a bit "soft". FULL VIEW is highly recommended for better appreciation of detail.

(Nikon D70, Nikon 12-24 lens, circular polarizer, f/7.1, 1/3 second, Bogen/Manfrotto tripod)

I actually referred my parents to your (off DA) gallery - they, too, were impressed. They raised me on Ansel Adams, so I wasn't too surprised. =D

Lovely as always.

This is a beautiful conversion, Greg. It seriously reminds me of Blackwater Falls here in WV in the winter. Same vantage point, same trees around it, just a little straighter drop than the falls here.

Thanks! I need to revisit WV. I have relatives near Charleston, and visited them briefly last June. We went to the New River Gorge, which was pretty cool. But I didn't get to see any waterfalls. Next time!

There are hundreds of waterfalls in the Gorge alone! I hope you get the chance to explore it next time you visit. :)

Now this beautiful image reminds me of Ansel Adams. How crisp and clear the scenery; I love the "angel hair" effect of the slow-exposure waterfall. It's a nice study in contrasting textures.

beautiful winter wonderland and equally beautiful fall and capture!

am curious on the decision for the settings, however, really appreciate the slower shutter to keep the details in the water, but wondering if you took any with just a tad longer exposure and smaller aperture?

That is a very good question. I took several shots ranging from 1/4 second to 2 full seconds. I decided upon this particular shot based upon two factors:

1. The crispness of the foliage -- with the Nikon 12-24mm lens, the corners generally get "soft" with smaller apertures, and I did not want that effect.

2. It is not obvious from this photo, but it was snowing. As the shutter speed lengthened, it became impossible to get a "dry" shot.
