South Sister is the third highest peak (10,358 feet) in the state of Oregon. I hiked/climbed to the summit several years ago, and stopped at sunrise to take this photograph of the mountain's reflection in Moraine Lake (6,450 feet elevation). Because I was not carrying my tripod, I tried to steady the camera on rocks to get as long an exposure (1/8 second) as possible. The high wind prevented me from getting a completely still reflection, but it was still quite nice.
The colours and scene are wonderful. It looks very peaceful and I like how the composition is created with the golden coloured hill in the foreground working with the mountain face.
This is a really nice shot, even though hand-held at 1/8 sec. I would never have know you didn't use a tripod, Greg. You took on the wind and won! What is amazing about this is the smooth, bare, sandy-appearing area on the left. Is that a normal scene for higher altitudes, or is it green grass turned tan? Either way, it is quite a striking feature.
