Multnomah Falls (Columbia River Gorge, Oregon USA) -- no tourists in sight on this icy January day!

NOTE: When displayed at its default size, the photo may appear a bit "soft". FULL VIEW is highly recommended for better appreciation of detail.

(Nikon D70, Nikon 12-24 lens, circular polarizer, f/4, 1/3 second, Bogen/Manfrotto tripod)

Also see the vertical study which includes the entire waterfall:

More winter waterfalls for your chilly viewing pleasure...

I went up there last winter to take pictures of Multnomah Falls frozen over. Unfortunately, the freezing weather did not chase away the crowds. It might have even attracted them. It was just as bad as summertime. This is beautiful! It's impossible to take a bad picture of this waterfall.

Thanks for your kind words!

Sometimes the crowds find their way to Multnomah Falls even in the icy conditions (although it is considerably more dangerous). I used my Yaktrax so I had no problems, but I saw plenty of tourists slipping and falling on the icy pavement.

At least you're prepared. When I went, I couldn't operate my camera with my gloves, so idiot-me took them off the whole time and ended up with frostnip. My fingers were sensitive for weeks.

Sorry about that! I was wearing gloves that allowed finger flexibility.

I love this. I always stop there when we go Salem to visit my daughter. Never made it to the top but one day I will :)

It's not very difficult to hike to the top. There are plenty of switchbacks, and it is paved nearly the entire way.

I like both photos, but actually prefer the vertical shot. Just my preference, I don't know why that is. It is a spectacular scene in both shots. Kudos to you, Greg!

nice!..this fall is so wicked in the winter!!..this one, however, compared to the vertical shot, looks a tad cool..was this done on purpose in post:?

Good question. I tried several things with the white balance, and decided upon this cooler treatment. Although it did not completely match the colors that I saw, it more accurately replicated the sensation that I felt while taking the photograph. I will be posting at least one more photograph soon where I used the same thought process.
