Sol Duc Falls Trail, Study 2c by greglief Sol Duc Falls Trail, Study 2c by greglief
Thank you for taking the time to visit my gallery! Faves, comments, collecting, and recommendations are always appreciated. Also, I invite you to download this image to use as your desktop wallpaper. Please respect my work by not printing, selling, or reposting it.

In May, my girlfriend and I visited the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. This is the third batch of photographs from that trip.

Sol Duc Falls is famous, but in my opinion somewhat anticlimactic. There are very few vantage points. However, we were delighted to discover a very photogenic creek along the trail to the waterfall. Fortunately I was wearing sandals, so I spent nearly half an hour walking in the water to find different vantage points.

NOTE: When displayed at its default size, the photo may appear a bit "soft". Full View is highly recommended for better appreciation of detail!

(Technical details: Nikon D90, Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 tripod, Tokina AT-X 116 lens, B+W Circular Polarizer, f/22, 3 seconds.)

Here is Study 1:

That area is so pretty, all that moss is so awesome. This would make a nice location for a model shoot.

I've seen both, and I am kinda with you here. Sol Duc falls is this big, thunderous thing and I wouldn't downplay how impressive it is, but it is the truth that you can only view it so many different ways. What you have here is called the 'Sol Duc Cascade', and I agree it is more widely photogenic in that there's so many different ways you can go about capturing it since you can stand over it, in it, at the top of it, at the bottom of it, etc...

There's also something subtly more magic about the cascade since you really can't reckon yourself with the falls, but the cascade you can stick your nose to and smell, touch the moss, feel the water gently running over your hands, in other words you can commune with it. You can give it a little metaphorical hug. Sol Duc falls, (when I saw it for the first time,) what the photos don't quite show with it is just how far up over the ravine you are, and honestly I was getting serious vertigo and I just kinda didn't want to linger around it.

I have my own photos of both, and our falls photos are strikingly similar [link] while I think I completely captured the cascade different from you [link] [link] [link] (which is the wonderful thing about it!) :D

You are certainly better with the smooth water blur than I...that is a technique I need to work on.

Thanks for your comments! I agree completely about the cascade vs the waterfall. Due to its placement (and that of the trail), the waterfall does not offer many artistic options. The waterfall is terrific, but in my opinion it is best seen in person rather than photographed.
