Whitehorse Falls by greglief Whitehorse Falls by greglief
Thank you for taking the time to visit my gallery. Faves and comments are always appreciated! Also, I invite you to download this image to use as desktop wallpaper. Please respect my work by not printing, selling, or reposting it.

It might not be the tallest waterfall in the world, but Whitehorse Falls is a nice example of the punchbowl form. It is located east of Roseburg, Oregon along the North Umpqua River. I got thoroughly sprayed, but managed to get one shot where the lens was dry.

Directions can be found at the "Thundering Waters" site.

If you enjoy this photo, please take a few moments to visit my Waterscapes gallery.

Oregon is ONE of the most beautiful place in the States. We lived in Washington State for 7 yrs and used to take vacations to Oregon....:)

That's AWESOME! :D Actually, I am starting to do the opposite... I am trying to spend a fair amount of time hiking/backpacking north of the Columbia River. Combined, Oregon and Washington have enough fantastic destinations to occupy an entire lifetime!

Agree... Our freinds all still live there or retired there....was jealous of their 67 degrees during the day a few weeks ago....Our heat index was 107...
We do miss the area but Recruiting is not something we want. Trying to hold out on Instructor. We have 1 yr 4 months til retirement and the Army is "flirting" with (rank, duty assignment, options etc) to keep us in (lol)

I, too, prefer 67 to 107. I spent the first part of my life in the DC area, and don't miss the summers at all! I hope that you can make it back soon.

Funny, we were offered an AI (civillian job with UAV's) in Maryland and I remember checking the heat index last week and it was 120 or something like that.We all hate the heat. It would be nice to go back or even just visit Washington State/Oregon again..Northern Cali is very pretty too around the Cascade Mountains....:)

For a second there I thought this was a waterfall near Whitehorse Yukon, and I thought it was going to give me another reason to want to visit. But I guess I'll have to live with another reason to visit Oregon instead ;)

This is a beautiful shot! :D

How did you get the water to get the way it is in the picture? Is it a filter type or editing?

Nothing tricky, just a relatively long exposure (1/1.3 second) with the camera mounted on my tripod. When doing any type of water photography (waterfalls, rivers, creeks), I always keep a circular polarizer on the lens. That drops the aperture by 2+ stops, which in turn allows for longer exposures.

Yes indeed. I started at your vantage point, tried a few shots from there, and then moved a bit further left. I don't know how the spray was when you were there, but I got pretty wet. It was also raining steadily, which didn't help. Lots of lens wiping between shots!

Beautiful. All the peace and tranquility that the place evokes with only looking at it.
